    In 1998, after gaining some experience working with the internet, I co-founded a company called Aluguel On-line with a group of friends. While the company achieved some impressive results, including one thousand daily hits and 3,000 properties rented in 1998 and 1999, we lacked the necessary planning and marketing knowledge to sustain its growth. As a result, I made the difficult decision to shut down the company and refocus my efforts on acquiring the skills I needed to succeed in the industry. This led me to pursue further education in marketing and other relevant subjects, allowing me to develop a deeper understanding of the industry and better position myself for success in future endeavors.

    After completing four semesters of civil engineering coursework, I came to the realization that it was not the right path for me. While I had a passion for mechanical and architectural design, my interest in the internet was rapidly growing.     Following the "Internet Fever", Brazilian companies have been searching for methods of matching available technologies to their strategies, rather than the reverse. The use of Internet based systems (in order to decrease lead times, costs, and to improve internal communication) implies that companies must increase the number of employees involved with virtual activities. This project is a result of a 300 hour internship at Portal Unimed. The project included integrating documented research, interactive observation, and interviews, all of which gathered, in an exploratory and qualitative way, information about the impacts caused by the adoption of this new configuration of the workplace by the members of the virtual group responsible for the tactical/operational actions of the company, otherwise known as the "Administradores do Portal". The project offers relevant information for administrators wishing to create roles involving virtual work within their team, including the selection process, the establishment of a desirable virtual worker profile, and the management of virtual groups and teams.
